MMUN - the Montessori Model United Nations - was launched in 2006 with an initial delegation of 200 students. Since then, the UN General Assembly has been recreated in several locations around the world with the aim of integrating topics such as world peace, international politics and conflict resolution into the curriculum. Pupils aged 9 to 15 are assigned to countries and are expected to represent the interests of these countries. What they learn here goes far beyond specific knowledge of politics, economics and geography. They experience politics, power and oppression. They practice resolving conflicts peacefully and maintaining contacts across borders. The mission of the initiative is to harness the power of Model United Nations to inform, inspire and motivate young participants to work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and change the world together. It is a wonderful opportunity that gives young people the courage and confidence to get involved locally and globally.

What do the participating students learn?

  • Cultures, governments and nationalities from all over the world
  • Researching, writing and communicating
  • Critical thinking, problem solving and assessment skills
  • Debate current global issues and worldwide problems
  • adopt new perspectives, understand the needs, interests and viewpoints of other countries
  • Leadership skills such as collaboration and negotiation in a truly global situation
  • Finding and communicating facts, not just opinions
  • Finding ways to resolve conflicts in the world and in your personal environment.
